APPLICATIONS TO OPEN FALL 2024
About the Program
We are currently seeking students to join research groups with faculty in Summer '24.
As a Scholars' Academy student, you will engage with other students as part of a Scholars' Academy cohort, sharing your experiences with each other. You will participate in a multi-year research project led by your faculty mentor. You are not expected to have prior research experience and will work alongside more senior students who along with your mentor will help you learn as you progress. Students who continue to further years will provide mentorship in turn for students who join after you.
We will provide funding for you to participate in the program, help you to apply to present your work at conferences including Great Minds in STEM, and provide additional advising and supplemental instruction support as a member of the Scholar's Academy.
This initial group would, in addition to their participation in a research group, work as a community of practice within the IUSE project to help us define aspects of the student's role, pilot additional student support activities, and to continue as part of the student team over the next three years as available. We are hoping that this pilot group will grow into leadership roles in the student team in future years.
Students with no previous research experience are encouraged to apply.
Expectations of a Student
Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
Student in good standing for Fall 23 in the Hennings College of Science, Technology, and Mathematics at Kean University
Students are willing to actively engage in hands-on research that is current in their fields to enrich their study and further academic goals.
Students participating in the program in Summer 23 should be available for roughly 80 hours of project work starting sometime after May 2024 and completing sometime before September 2024, depending on agreed upon schedule with the faculty mentor. Students can coordinate with their project mentor to arrange their availability Itypically 10-20 hours per week) and the duration of the project.
Students will join a research team led by a faculty mentor, actively interacting and collaborating with other team members during the summer and throughout the year.
Students are encouraged to reapply for multiple years, continuing to grow skill and experience through research to develop deliverables in the forms of conference presentations and/or journal publications.
Work agreed upon hours with the faculty mentor, including weekly meetings and regular logging of the experience in a research journal.
Engage in professional development activities.
Prepare and submit a research poster to the Great Minds in Science conference (GMiS) (students should assume there will be multiple levels of review and revision)
Present the research poster at GMiS if the student is still enrolled during the semester when the conference is held (fall semester).
Students selected to participate for summer 2023 will recieve a stipend of $1000.
Hispanic students are strongly encouraged to apply.
