About the program
As a Scholar's Academy mentor, you will lead a team of up to 6 undergraduate research students. Mentors who continue from year to year in the program are expected to help recruit 2 students per year into each Scholars' Academy cohort, and build a research experience for your team including students at introductory and more experienced levels (A typical team will build to 2 first year students, 2 second year students, and 2 third year students, with an additional advanced student leader). Funding is available for student mentees and additional research supplies if needed. Faculty mentors will work with students with the intent to present research posters at conferences including Great Minds in STEM, and provide additional advising and supplemental instruction support as members of the Scholar's Academy. Faculty Mentors will receive a stipend for their team leadership.
Expectations of a mentor
Mentors will be faculty members in good standing in the Hennings College of Science, Technology, and Mathematics at Kean University
Faculty mentors will actively engage in research that is current in their fields, and will be able to describe a publishable project with clear deliverables.
Faculty mentors are encouraged to continue from year to year to grow a research team with multiple levels of student skill and experience.
Faculty will have a clear plan of how to both recruit and engage undergraduates to be successful on their project, and ensure that this engagement helps to further the students academic goals.
Faculty will take part in professional development. (Projects for summer 2023 will have ARG training on June12th and 13th). This will also require in participating as a member of our community of practice, including regular reporting and follow up activities throughout the project.
Faculty will use the Affinity Research Group (ARG) model for the students’ research experiences.
Work with the mentee to develop a research plan with clear milestones.
Ensure that students’ weekly entries in their research journals are made.
Provide a constructive review of the mentee’s research journal and other deliverables.
Review and critique students’ posters for submission upon completion.
Submit mid-term and final reports (templates will be provided).
Faculty selected to participate to run a research team for Summer 2023 will recieve a stipend of $3250.
